If you’re looking to improve home security, these are some great tools and pieces of equipment to use. Not all are expensive or require installation.
Adjustable Door Rod
The adjustable door rod is one of the simplest ways to keep your home safe. If you have sliding glass doors, you simply drop this rod into the track on the inside.
Now when someone tries to open the door, it will be jammed by the rod and they won’t be able to do it. You can also adjust the rod when you want to leave the door partway open for ventilation, but not enough to let a person in.
Dowel Rod
You can also secure sliding glass doors on the cheap with a sturdy dowel rod cut to size. Just drop it in the track, and no one and open the door from the outside.
Door Jammer
The door jammer does for regular doors what the adjustable door right above does for sliding glass doors. You jam it up under a door knob, and even if someone can get the door unlocked, they can’t push it open.
I’ve use these for decades, and I’ve tested them with friends. They really work.
Window locks
Window locks are another low cost investment you can make in your home security. Lots of affordable window lock options are available for every type of window.
Motion Sensing Exterior Lights
Install some motion sensing exterior lights around the outside of your home. A bright light coming on is usually enough to scare off any one trying to break into a door or window.
Video Doorbell
A video doorbell may not stop at intruder on its own, but it can be a deterrent. It’s also a great device for knowing who’s been coming around your home when you’re not there.
Motion Sensor Camera
You can also place motion sensor cameras around the exterior of your home, covering doors and windows where you think someone might try to break in. Pair them with motion sensing lights, and you’ve got a real deterrent to scare intruders away while also collecting footage of them.
Exterior Light Timers
You can put your exterior lights on timers for when you’re going to be away from home. This way you can have them come on at the same time every day or night, for the same amount of time, and it will help disguise when you’re not home.
Solar Powered Lights
Solar powered lights are also helpful with home security. By brightening up dark areas around your house and yard, they make it harder for intruders to find a path to break in without being seen.
Light Switch Timer
An indoor light switch timer can cause lights, television, and other appliances come on and go off at certain times every day. This is a great way to make it look like you’re home even when you’re not.
