Benefits of DIY All-Purpose Cleaners

So why would you want this? Maybe you’ve had a cleaner you used affect your throat or make your asthma worse. Or maybe you just want to save money.

1. Cost-effective: Homemade cleaners are much cheaper than commercial alternatives. You can save money in the long run.

2. Eco-friendly: Commercial cleaners often contain harsh chemicals that can harm aquatic life and contribute to air pollution. You can avoid any of those chemicals you want to, in your homemade cleaner.

3. Healthier home: Many store-bought cleaning products contain chemicals that can trigger allergies and respiratory issues. DIY cleaners allow you to control what goes into your cleaning products, reducing the risk of exposure to harmful substances.

4. Versatility: All-purpose cleaners can be used on various surfaces, making them a convenient option for tackling different cleaning tasks around the house.

Is All-Purpose Cleaner the Same as Disinfectant?

This question comes up sometimes, and the answer is no. Whether you buy it in a store or make it at home, cleaners will kill some germs, but not as many as a disinfectant.

That means they’re great for most cleaning jobs around the house, but if you want to disinfect surfaces, you’ll need to make our homemade disinfectant wipes or learn more about disinfecting high-touch surfaces.

That said, I did include a disinfectant recipe – number 3. It includes hydrogen peroxide, which really will disinfect surfaces, and is safe to use on most.

Essential Ingredients

So what are some of the ingredients that make these homemade cleaners work?

💦 White vinegar: Known for its acidic properties, white vinegar is an excellent natural cleaner. It may not be a true disinfectant, but it cuts through grease, kills some germs, and helps to eliminate odors.

🧽 Baking soda: This versatile ingredient acts as a mild abrasive and helps remove stains and odors. It is particularly effective on stubborn grime and can be used on various surfaces.

🍋 Lemon juice: The acidity in lemon juice makes it a powerful degreaser and helps remove stubborn stains. It also leaves a fresh citrus scent behind.

🫧 Hydrogen peroxide: if you truly want to disinfect a surface, hydrogen peroxide is great. Gentle enough for most surfaces, but it really gets rid of the germs.

🧪 Essential oils: Adding a few drops of essential oils not only enhances the fragrance of your homemade cleaner but also provides additional antibacterial properties. Popular choices include tea tree oil, lavender oil, and citrus oils.
