Learn to Fluff Your Pillows Like Hotels Do
When you stay at a luxurious hotel, have you ever wondered how they manage to make their pillows so fluffy and inviting? It’s not magic. It’s just a skill you can learn.

Fluffing helps to redistribute the filling materials inside the pillow. That way, they don’t clump in spots, which prevents the pillows from being as comfortable and supportive as they should be.
Choosing the Right Pillows
Not all pillows are created equal when it comes to getting that hotel-worthy fluffiness. Your best options are down or down alternative pillows.
They’re known for their ability to retain their loft and provide a cloud-like feel. Be sure to choose pillows with a higher fill power to get better quality and loftiness.
Note that memory foam or other non-traditional material pillows can’t be fluffed and may need different methods of maintenance. Try airing them out or using a dryer on a no-heat setting if manufacturer instructions allow.
Always check the care label for specific instructions.
Daily Pillow Maintenance
To maintain the fluffiness of your pillows, they need some daily maintenance – just like they would get at a hotel. Start by giving your pillows a gentle shake to redistribute the filling materials.
Next, fluff them up by kneading or squeezing them gently with your hands, ensuring that all areas receive equal attention.
Pillow Plumping and Beating
The technique commonly used by hotel staff is pillow plumping and beating.
- Hold the Pillow at the Ends: Grasp the two shorter sides of the pillow with your hands.
- Push and Pull: Push the ends of the pillow in towards each other, then pull them back out. Repeat this several times.
- Rotate and Repeat: Rotate the pillow 90 degrees and repeat the pushing and pulling motion on the other two sides.
- Shake: Give the pillow a good shake from different angles to redistribute the filling evenly.
- Plump with Fists: Use your fists to gently hit the pillow on all sides, including the front and back.
- Lay Flat and Pat: Lay the pillow flat and use your hands to pat it into shape gently.
I do some of these things to my pillows every day. Mine get dips from my head every night, so I shake and beat until they’re like new for the next night’s sleep.
Fluffing with Tennis Balls or Dryer Balls
For an extra boost of fluffiness, you can use tennis balls or dryer balls. Place two clean tennis balls or dryer balls inside a dryer with your pillows and run a low heat cycle.
As the balls bounce around, they help to break up any clumps and distribute the filling more evenly.
Sunning and Air Fluffing
If you prefer a more natural approach, sunning and air fluffing can work wonders for your pillows. On a sunny day, lay your pillows flat outside, letting them soak up the sunlight for a few hours.
The sun’s warmth helps to revitalize the filling materials and eliminate any trapped moisture or odors. Afterward, give them a good fluffing session using your hands or a pillow-beating technique to restore their shape.
Regular Pillow Rotation
To prevent uneven wear and flatten spots, you’ll need to rotate your pillows regularly. Aim to flip them over or rotate them 180 degrees every two weeks.
This makes sure that all areas of the pillow get equal pressure and fluffing, so they stay plump and comfortable longer.
The Power of Pillow Protectors
Pillow protectors can help preserve your pillows’ fluffiness in the long run. They act as a barrier against sweat, oils, and dust mites, preventing them from seeping into the filling and causing clumping or degradation over time.
Choose protectors made from breathable materials like cotton or bamboo for optimal airflow.
Fluffing Pillows on Demand
To get that instant fluffiness whenever needed, there are a few techniques you can try. Firstly, give your pillow a firm karate chop right in the center to redistribute the filling materials and create an immediate plump effect.
You can also use your hands to push and pull on opposite sides of the pillow repeatedly, coaxing it back to its fluffy state.
